Coordinated by Michel d’Avenas, a 30-year bagpipe instructor and the Pipe Major of the award-winning Monterey Bay Pipe Band, and the Board of Directors of the Monterey Celtic Arts Academy (a 501(c)3), the new Monterey Bay School of Piping will feature outstanding internationally renowned piping instructors from Scotland, Australia, Canada, and the United States. Featured instructors will include Murray Blair (Scotland Victoria Police Pipe Band), Ann Gray (Canada Western Canada’s Celtic Band Seanachie), Adam Quinn (United States formerly of the world championship Simon Fraser University Pipe Band), Mark Saul (Australia Victoria Police Pipe Band), Aaron Shaw (United States Wicked Tinkers/Los Angeles Police Pipe Band), and more. All ages and skill levels will be welcome to participate in the school. Attendees will be able to enjoy cost-effective room and board rates at Stevenson School or take classes at the school daily and stay at hotels throughout the region. Local day students will also be welcome, and a limited number of scholarships will be available. Donations and sponsors are being sought to underwrite some of the initial costs of the school and scholarships. |

Founded in 1967. This enjoyable Celtic celebration brings the music, dance and athletic events of the mystical lands of Scotland and Ireland to Monterey County. Featuring fun activities for the whole family, the Scottish Games & Celtic Festival will offer a variety of live Celtic entertainment with massed pipe bands on parade, including world competition bands, and Scottish and Irish singers and dancers. In addition, there will be exciting Scottish heavy athletic competition events, including the famous Caber Toss. Other fun and colorful activities will include pipe band competitions, Drum Major competitions, Highland Dancing, Scottish Country Dancing, Irish Step Dancing, Clan and Celtic Association Tents, the “Gathering of the Clans,” and much more. There will be lots of fun and games for the wee ones at the children's games, too. Delicious Irish, Scottish and other British food and drink and unique crafts, jewelry, clothing, and music will be enjoyed by all. Presented by the Scottish Society of the Monterey Peninsula, a portion of the Festival proceeds will benefit many non-profit organizations. |

The sights, sounds, and food of Scotland can be experienced at the annual Dixon Scottish Games & Gathering at the Dixon Fairgrounds, 655 South First Street, Dixon, California.
The family activities will include Scottish, Irish, and Celtic folk bands; Scottish Highland and Scottish country dancing; 11 award-winning bagpipe bands; Scottish athletic competitions; crafts, food, and beers of the British Isles; Scottish clan information booths; a rugby tournament; living history and Scottish animal exhibits; a fire-breathing dragon; children’s activities; and the colorful pageantry of the festival’s opening and closing ceremonies. A "ceilidh" barbecue dinner is scheduled at 6 p.m. on the Dixon Fairgrounds, immediately after the Scottish games' closing ceremonies. The Dixon Highland gathering was named as the best one-day Scottish festival in the United States which attracted nearly 7,000 visitors in 2004. General admission is $8 per person, and $6 for seniors (age 62 and older) and youths (ages 9 to 17). Children under age 9 will be admitted free. Dixon Fairgrounds RV and tent camping is available, with lodging discounts at participating Dixon hotels. Pets on leashes are welcome on the fairgrounds. Dixon is 19 miles southwest of Sacramento, along Interstate 80. |
